The Hidden Process

From Sketch to Shop: The Journey of a Custom Table

Custom furniture is a labor of love, requiring time, precision, and an eye for detail. This week, I began a last-minute project—a custom table build for a client who needs it before Christmas. While the final piece will undoubtedly shine in her home, the behind-the-scenes journey is something most people might not realize goes into creating custom furniture.

Designing the Vision
Every project starts with a design. Using SketchUp, I worked with the client to create a design that suited her needs and aesthetic preferences. Once she approved the design, she chose white oak as the wood species—a timeless choice for its strength and beautiful grain patterns.

Selecting the Perfect Lumber
Next came the hunt for the right materials. I visited Owl Hardwood Lumber, where I hand-selected each board to ensure the quality and character of the wood matched the client’s vision. This isn’t a quick task—choosing the perfect lumber requires evaluating each piece for color, grain, and structural integrity. Once selected, the wood came back to my shop to acclimate.

Why acclimate? Wood responds to its environment. Bringing the lumber into the shop allows it to adjust to the temperature and humidity levels, preventing potential warping or movement once the table is built.

The Milling Process
Here’s where the real work begins. Milling transforms raw lumber into precision-sized pieces ready for joinery. It’s a time-intensive process, involving multiple steps:

  1. Jointing: Flattening one edge & face of the board.

  2. Planing: Creating a consistent thickness.

  3. Ripping & Crosscutting: Cutting the boards to exact widths and lengths.

After hours of work, the pile of lumber still looks like… a pile of lumber. But now, every piece is flat, square, and perfectly dimensioned—ready to start becoming the table the client envisioned.

The Craftsmanship Behind the Scenes
One thing clients may not realize about custom furniture is how much effort goes into preparation before the actual “building” begins. The process starts the moment I step into the lumberyard and continues with meticulous planning, design, and milling. These early stages lay the foundation for a successful project and ensure the final piece is both beautiful and functional.

What’s Next?
With the wood milled and ready, I’ll begin transforming these raw materials into the custom table next week. This is where the design starts to come to life, as each piece of white oak is carefully glued up, shaped, sanded, joined, and finished. Stay tuned for updates as this project takes shape!
